How to Fix Color Banding in Photoshop – Get Smooth Gradients
In this photoshop photo editing tutorial, i will show you how to fix color banding in your images easily. Color Banding occurs when the transition between colors is not smooth, which can create patterns of vertical lines or circular curves depends on the situation. Color Banding won’t be very visible in some areas where you have a lot of details/objects (such as faces, trees, or any complex subject). This can be very visible when shooting clear blue sky or sunsets, as well as when shooting on a color backdrop in the studio like in this sample photograph. Now, as you can see, the transitions in the background in our sample image are not smooth at all and i can be 100% sure the image will band in printing. If you’re in product photography business, banding is something you encounter all the time.

Now let’s see How to remove this Color Banding?
First duplicate background layer CTRL+J. Take a lasso tool and make a rough selection around the main subject.
If banding occur on sky photos, the easiest way is probably to use a Magic Wand tool & Select the part of the image that suffers from banding.
Now go to edit menu – select fill. Choose content aware with color adaptation option checked. Click ok.
Deselect selection CTRL+D.
Now go to Filter – Filter Gallery. Go into Brush Strokes group and select Spatter. You’ll need to adjust Spray Radius so it’s very high, maybe all the way to max value of 25 and Smoothness all the way down to 1. Now hit OK.
Now select current layer and hold alt key and click on layer mask to apply inverted mask to the layer. Now take brush tool and paint on problematic areas with white color.
Color banding is gone. As you can see, the color transition in the background is much smoother and looks professional.
Tip to avoid color banding is try to shoot in high quality JPEG or in RAW. And don’t push values too much during post-processing.
